Reply-To: "Tim Egan" Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2005 10:51:28 -0600 Folks, Looking for a tape of the current tour by Green Day. Taped them 9-21-2005 at the Delta Center, Salt Lake City, but got caught half way thru the show. Damn. Had fun with the cops, in their 'detaining' room, they kept trying to turn my M1 off, which had the hold set. Kind funny. I told one of them that I would show him how to turn it off, because I couldn't stand watching the deck kick his ass. I got to go back and finish watching the concert after surrendering the tape. Had I been able to erase it, they probably would have let me keep the tape too, but I did not have a good way to fake erasing it, so I just let it go. I guess you gotta sacrifice one to the taping gods every once in a while. Not sure what gave me up, but I was only 3 seats away from the aisle, a cop probably spotted the mikes on my hat and wires running thru my hair. Lessons learned: At Higher security venues, I think I'll come up with mike mounts on my shoulders, wires running inside the shirt. And, once taping, dont fiddle with the deck. Getting thru security was dicey, they wanded me, but my deck was next to my goodies, and they missed it there. So, I was probably a little cocky having beat them. I flew out of Gatwick four days after the July 7th bombings, and my DAT deck and mics didn't raise any eyebrows. In fact, before leaving London I didn't even attract any attention when I was taking the gear out of a backpack to make field recordings in stations and trains in the Underground. But I wouldn't even think about doing that now, since the police have 'shoot to kill' orders. I'm assuming you've heard about the unarmed Brazilian guy who was tackled and then shot seven times in the head on one of the trains, because the police thought he might be a terrorist. > 2) Venue security at British venues in general. The places I will be > taping are smaller 1000-2000 seat halls. You can assume that security will be similar to comparably sized American venues. -thomas ------------------------------ From: "Roger" Subject: Gatwick security Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2005 19:33:26 -0400 I fly into Gatwick several times a year from the US, most recently in August. Heading over again in Oct. After an interminable walk, at least from the Delta gates, you go through immigration. This last trip took longer for the line to move but they didn't ask me much. They don't look in anything here and you won't have your checked luggage yet anyway. Make sure you have their form filled out before landing to save time, and have your passport ready. I hate it when people start fumbling around for it when they are standing at the desk. Do they think they just crossed into Kansas or something? Anyway, head down the ramp to baggage reclaim. Pick up your checked stuff, if any, and go through the "nothing to declare" doors from baggage reclaim straight out to the curb. I did see that they pulled one person off to the side and were asking questions on this last trip, which was after the underground bombings. Really, inbound isn't a problem and neither is outbound. Can't comment on venue security as I've either not had time to goof off or there wasn't anything to go see. Music wise, plenty of other stuff to go see of course. let me know if you have any specific questions on Gatwick. Roger roger@moroney.org From: tapeheadtoo@aol.com Subject: International taping run Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2005 13:51:08 -0400 Hi fellow DAT heads I followed the recent thread on taking gear through airport security. I have done so many times in the US and never encountered any problem. They seem to be more interested in confiscating my tiny toenail scissors, than even taking out my gear for inspection. (Seriously, I think it's only been looked at maybe once.) However, now I am planning a trip to the UK. I am concerned about security issues, especially in light of the recent London bombings. Would anyone be able to advise me on the following: 1) Airport security and customs procedures going to the UK (London-Gatwick) and back. 2) Venue security at British venues in general. The places I will be taping are smaller 1000-2000 seat halls.
