There's a good chance that they will lose even more money once they
get signed. Unless you are the Stones, etc, a record deal is like a
very bad bank loan. There are many many stories of bands that get
signed, sell tons of product and end up with nothing, while the
record company folks make out like bandits. Imagine getting a 250,
000 advance that you have to pay back where your repayment dollar is
worth only 35c.
I don't necessarily agree with encouraging fans to copy
official release CDs, but getting the music out there is the best
advertisement to get people to show up at the gigs. If you own your
own CD, you don't lose as much money as you do if a record company
owns it. If it helps increase your numbers at gigs, you can stand to
increase your bottom line much faster. This is the reason that I have
always encouraged taping at my gigs.

PS I am pretty much a cynic, too. The music business sucks.
The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long
plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die
like dogs. There's also a negative side.-Hunter Thompson

www.dimeadozen.org has at least 20 of em. Their membership is capped but they purge a bunch of old accounts each day. If you can't signup just try again later.

The band was "Show of Hands", a folk duo who are fairly big in these
circles. (http://www.showofhands.co.uk/)
I am told by my colleague that "This kind of thing is not unusual in
the folkie world, e.g., http://www.davidrovics.com/ has all his music
freely downloadable as well as for sale."
Not my scene personally: I am a classical musician/fan (western,
modern and indian).

First, Relix magazine was over 20 years ago, Jerry is
dead and the MORONS at RELIX should pry their hands
off of the pipe and move the F@ck on.
I NEVER signed up for their SPAM they will not honor
multiple requests to remove me. The idiots sent me
their worthless rag for 2 years I only used it to
light my firepalce. The most recent piece of sh!t spam
has three references to Jerry, JERRY IS F@UCKING DEAD
MOVE ON, repeat JERRY DIED OF A DRUG OD, HE IS DEAD.
Jerry laid down some great music but like him your
magazine is Died years ago!!

You are right, they may be the next Rolling Stones, I don't know. What I do
know, is that generally speaking, an item of little value is easily parted
with. For example, people give away items which they believe have little or
no value to the Salvation Army . Trash has such little value we actually
pay people to take it. (But yesterday someone did take my
neighbor's old toolbox out of the trash pile.)
The reason why it sounds strange for me to claim that certain "music is
worthless" comes from equivocation. In this case, I mean "worthless"
strictly in an economic sense, not in an aesthetic or pleasure producing
sense. Many bands that produce pleasure in a loyal, albeit, small following
generate no revenue. Also, the Latin Jazz that is aesthetically valuable to
me (thus producing incentive and justification to assign economic worth),
may be worthless to you.
> Last time I checked, Pearl Jam has no problem with people sharing their
> bootlegs either, including the "official" bootlegs.
> They aren't exactly a local bar band.
1. I can find no official policy from PJ which condones sharing of
recordings. I would be interested in their download license agreement.
2. Even if #1 were untrue, it seems the "official" bootleg CD's are "worth"
$9.95.
3. "Real" bootlegs are economically "worthless" because (a) they are not
commercially viable; and, (b) they are illegal.
If you (or anyone else) wants to continue this discussion, please feel free
to contact me off list. I am currently working on some ideas for a future
conference paper, so objections to my assertions on this topic are taken
thoughtfully.
Best,
-M
