Is this a good way to do it? Right now I 'play' the DAT and grab it via an m-audio 2496, which works fine, but I'm thinking that the less playing I do on the recording device the better. Would I get the same results using a DAT tape drive? Also, an external DAT tape drive would be more portable. If the answer is yes, there seem to be a variety of capacities associated with DAT tape drives (2/4 GB, 4/18GB, 12/24GB non-comp/compressed) and tape compatibility (DDS-2, DDS-3, DDS-4 etc.). Presumeably the capacity of a tape drive has to do with its ability to record data, not its read ability. Maybe both? Does anybody know the story on how those specs relate to a DAT tape filled with music? Much thanks for any answers that come my way. Define "commercially viable"; if a store selling something for $25, is it "commercially viable"? Would you claim that cocaine is "worthless" because it's illegal? The people who willingly pay a lot of money for it would seem to disagree with you. He offered to pay via paypal and I'd send it to him but we both live in NYC so decided he'd pick it up in person. We'd arranged to meet one day, confirmed by phone (his # is 646 772-3215 and lives in Staten Island), and then became impossible to reach and never responded to any calls/emails that I left him. Anybody else been misled by this guy, or know if he's still in existence?? I can't say I was ripped off as I didn't lose anything but my time and the annoyance of bringing the machine to work, but it wasn't a cool move nonetheless. So, I'd say if he contacts you, be warned. And if anybody else has had any dealings with him, let me know. Meanwhile, anybody need a Fostex CR300 [I think that's the model; it's still at work now] pro cd burner? It powers on and will pass a signal but says "check disc" whenever I put in any type of disc. Advances/signing bonuses are not like signing bonuses in major league sports. It almost always comes out of future royalties. Also coming out of royalties are most expenses like studio time, publicity, legal fees, etc. At 10:50 AM 11/9/2005 -0500, you wrote: >Imagine getting a 250,000 advance that you have to pay back where >your repayment dollar is >worth only 35c. ------------------------------ From: "David Whitmer" Subject: how to use preamp? Date: Thu, 10 Nov 2005 10:59:59 -0500 Hello, I am pretty new to this recording thing so please bear with me if my questions seem ridiculous. Right now I have a Tascam DA-P1 DAT recorder, an Audio Technica stereo mic and a Sound Devices 302 3-channel mixer/preamp (I plan on getting another mic for the mixer but haven’t yet). Basically I want to know how best to use this setup - the DAT recorder I’m comfortable with but I’m clueless regarding the preamp. First, I assume I use the XLR outputs on the preamp to connect to the XLR inputs on the DAT, right? I ask because I once saw something to the contrary in a discussion group, (don’t recall exactly where). Secondly, if I understand things correctly, I want to record at line level (the preamps ouput is line level) so as to override the DAT’s preamps. I found nothing in the DAT manual regarding this so I got brave and set the DAT input levels at 10 and the analog input to “line.” It seemed to work - I got a good strong signal to the DAT but still got a level reading on the meter (roughly -14 to -8 db). Does this make sense? why should I get a level reading at all and should I even pay attention to it? Finally, what is the basic idea behind getting the best sound possible out of the preamp? do I just want to record everything as hot as possible without clipping? I’ve also read something to the effect of wanting to keep my faders as close to unity-gain as possible - what on earth does this mean? As you can tell I’m pretty lost and confused - can anyone help me out? Hope to hear from you. ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
