Not only that, but a lot of > groups/artists that might not get wide exposure are instantly available t= o > thousands of people. Agreed. And,... yeah, just agreed, wholeheartedly. > I belonged to a lot of trading groups and did the snail mail thing for > years. Ditto. Traded well over a thousand discs through the mails, to and from Italy, Australia, the Netherlands, Brasil, Germany, Sweden, the UK, as well as the US and Canada >You'll never see a vine get broken on DIME. ...though, to be fair, seeders sometimes disappear without notice before they've shared out the complete torrent, and sometimes never come back. >You also won't download a > show with the 2-second gap because a newbie didn't understand how to copy > discs properly. ????!1?!1?!?1!??!!one??! This is your one observation where I have to differ. Have you listened to much of what you've downloaded? There are sets with two-second gaps and (worse) sector boundary errors all OVER the place on Dimeadozen. Newbies are everywhere. You take the bad with the good - I wouldn't trade Dimeadozen.org away under anything but EXTREME duress, but ya gotta face it - in bringing trading to a new level of ease and effortlessness, it has attracted a LOT of,... enthusiasts who don't know - nor WANT to know nor even realize they SHOULD know - the first thing about PCM wav file formats, Red Book specifications, the difference between DAT and MD, or even WHY MP3 is a problematic format when a tracker site prefers to keep everything lossless if at all possible. > As for your other comments, well, I'll just say that I enjoy the > democratization of sharing live music. I have always shared my recordings > openly but also know that some tapers only share with other tapers. Contr= ary > to your claim, DIME has allowed many formerly limited shared performances= to > be shared with many. It has most definitely led to a positive increase in > the amount of material available -- to the masses, for the price of a fas= t > internet connection. What's wrong with that? P2P/BitTorrent sharing has also carried the status of live music recordings one step closer to being totally commoditized. It's more abstract than just trading X number of specific discs (or DATs) of your own at someone else's choice for the like number of discs carefully chosen by you from their list - and if you don't have anything they want, you might not get what you want from theirs. In BitTorrentWorld(TM), you accrue an abstract amount of upload credit in general (at least on Dime and other tracker sites that enforce a share ratio) simply by using your bandwidth to share files to anyone who wants them, and have free reign to grab anything and everything you want in return, no matter who it comes from. It's no longer a one-to-one trade, and since torrents are fleeting, you (or at least where you =3D ME) grab anything that sounds on a whim as if it'd be interesting, with much less pause to distinguish it from the rest of the chaff. Well, I exaggerate, but it's still true. Not that everything available through BT is chaff or interchangeable.=20 There are a few star traders who have shared such a staggering quantity of such obscure, rarefied gems (punkjazz, you know who you are) that it's immediately obvious that I would not have been able to accumulate a comparable collection of, say, live John Zorn projects, in years of snail-mail slogging, whereas it's taken a few months of keeping an eye out on Dime, and clicky-clicky-wheeeeeee. There's also a ton of sharers on various mailing lists asking the usual newbie-taper questions - what device to buy, what mics to use, where and when to go stealth, how to go about the whole process of taping and preparing a recording for upload,... BitTorrent may make taping superfluous for a lot of veterans who tape the same Springsteen/Dylan/moe. shows that dozens of other tapers do, but for mavericks such as I fancy myself, there are potentially a lot more beginners with obscure tastes who, given the sudden insight into how much live taping goes on, will now be inspired to be the only guy in an audience of fifty taping Faun Fables or ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead. I can't find it in myself to gripe about that. da9ve
