DAT-heads Digest #696, Volume #7 Mon, 19 Dec 05 13:50:01 EST Contents: Re: HD/DVD recorder ("Gary Davis") ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Gary Davis" Subject: Re: HD/DVD recorder Reply-to: g@hoxnet.com Date: Sun, 18 Dec 2005 15:12:42 -0800 First, I would advise against +R. In my experience, it has poorer playback compatibility than -R, and it's become a niche format for Philips as most other companies have chosen -R as their preferred mode. Also, +RW is a clearly inferior format to -RW and -RAM, as +RW is not a random-access format (it's acts just like a tape: you can record over a section in the middle of the disc, just make sure you don't erase what's after the part you are re-recording!) As to your question about network compatibility, you did not explain what you want to do on the network. Most machines will not let you transfer MPEG2 video files from or to the machine. (But if you know of a machine that does allow this, please tell us about it!) Panasonic made a machine called the DMR-E500, now discontinued, that was net-ready and did allow you to record and transfer things in MPEG4. However, I'd guess you'd have to dub these files "in realtime" before you could write them to a compatible DVD. --Gary ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
