It sounds to me like the heads on your jvc-xd-z507 home deck are mis-aligned. That's why tapes recorded on that deck do not play back properly on any other deck (and why tapes made on other decks may not sound quite as good on your home deck). While it's always a good idea to keep capstans and pinch rollers clean, that doesn't sound like your problem. Have the heads aligned and you should be good to go.

Subject: dat tape compatability

I have several decks that I use at home and at work.
I do taping at both places, and I can't seem to use
the tapes made on my home deck jvc-xd-z507, on any
other deck, even the jvc-xd-z507 at work. They do
play but sound distorted or smeared. When the tape
made on my home jvc is played on a Panasonic sv-3800,
it sounds smeared and the cleaning light comes on. If
I play it on any portable sonys again they sound
smeared. However, the tapes made on the jvc at work,
(same brand of tape), sound great on all decks. Does
anyone have sugestions. My thoughts are to replace
the pinch roller on all decks, clean all rollers and
see if the tension adjustments are the same in all
like decks. Any help would be appreciated. Bill
