...most important to remember:
once you align the heads on your deck, the tapes that
were recorded on them, will in turn be out of line
with the re-aligned deck. before you have your decks
worked on, it will be wise to clone your tapes from
the deck-to-be-aligned to your "reference" deck...and
make sure to include all relevant info on decks used,
dates etc when you label the clones to prevent future
confusion - as you may need to clone again if the
"reference" deck, in turn, needs to be re-aligned.
as such, i have several masters that no longer play on
any of my decks, though i have clones that play on
them all.

It sounds to me like the heads on your jvc-xd-z507
home deck are
mis-aligned. That's why tapes recorded on that deck do
not play back properly
on any other deck (and why tapes made on other decks
may not sound
quite as good on your home deck). While it's always a
good idea to keep
capstans and pinch rollers clean, that doesn't sound
like your problem.
Have the heads aligned and you should be good to go.

I have several decks that I use at home and at work.
I do taping at both places, and I can't seem to use
the tapes made on my home deck jvc-xd-z507, on any
other deck, even the jvc-xd-z507 at work. They do
play but sound distorted or smeared. When the tape
made on my home jvc is played on a Panasonic sv-3800,
it sounds smeared and the cleaning light comes on. If
I play it on any portable sonys again they sound
smeared. However, the tapes made on the jvc at work,
(same brand of tape), sound great on all decks. Does
anyone have sugestions. My thoughts are to replace
the pinch roller on all decks, clean all rollers and
see if the tension adjustments are the same in all
like decks. Any help would be appreciated. Bill

I know it's a bit torrent world now, but on the off chance people still
enjoy trading I'm looking for a couple things:
Van Halen 3/25/79 Selland Arena - Fresno,CA
Pink Floyd 10/17/70 Pepperland - San Rafael,CA
Doing some checking at db.etree.org tells me there are recently released
.flac versions of these. I'd love to get them.
Thanks,
Alex
