Cardioids will be roughly 1.7 times the distance of Omni's to achieve the same ambience. 5' in Omnis = 8.5' Cardioids. 2. Cardioids at a close distance exhibit a proximity effect. They also posess off axis coloration. 3. You will have a greater choice of stereo arrays with the Cardioids. -M
From: "Gary Davis" <g@hoxnet.com> Subject: Check out the Five Browns Reply-to: g@hoxnet.com Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 22:37:51 -0700 Since this list is so dead lately, I thought I'd go slightly off-topic. The Five Browns are appearing on the Today show Saturday morning (probably after 8:30am on NBC) and on Breakfast with the Arts, A&E, Sunday morning sometime between 8 and 10am. The Five Browns are five people (mostly women) who all play piano at the same time. They arrange the pianos in something of a pentagram. It's different, to say the least... --Gary

From: "Bob Griesel" <sundance@olywa.net> Subject: RE: Subject: cardiod stealth lav questions Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2006 11:23:34 -0700 A couple of additional thoughts on #2 below - Proximity effect is a reality with cardioids, but usually does not become part of the equation so long as the distance is measured in feet. The off-axis coloration of a directional mic varies greatly from model to model. Many cardioids sound wonderful on-axis, and when used close enough to the source (like, measured in inches) the off-axis response is not very noticeable. But, when used at distances measured in feet, the off-axis source level can be almost as loud as what's in front of the mic. In this case, off-axis coloration can and often does result in a lousy recording. You can predict which cardioid mics have good off-axis sound. Just look at the polar frequency response charts. A really good mic will have response circles that are almost the same at all frequencies. A lousy mic will have response circles that vary greatly from frequency to frequency. Compare a DPA 4011 with an AKG C3000. Both are good mics, but the difference in off-axis response is considerable and can be easily heard in the recordings. Off-axis response is one of the main differences between how various mics sound when used for audience recording. It is the main reason folks will spend big bucks on mics (whether that is understood by the purchaser or not).
