Hi Sean, and all ships at sea...
I think J Levene said it best:-

For many years, I also have been on the DatHeads list, mostly lurking and
listening, and it has been well run. Recently, the InterNet snakes have
crawled out from under their rocks and have managed to post their drivel to the
list.
If the present list is working well, there is no need to change it if the
desired blocking of the spammers can be accomplished with only slight
inconvenience to members, and without adding to the work load of the list owner.
I own a few YahooGroups lists and moderate another one. There has been no
trouble with Yahoo and since new members must be approved AND I put them all on
moderate for a few posts, we have clean lists. There are spammer attempts, but
all have been caught by the moderating process, and if they find they can't
get their drivel posted, perhaps they will move on to greener fields.

Anyone here have any experience recording Tibetan bowls? Any
tips on mics and placement to get started? I'm pretty clueless
here, although they don't strike me as the kind of instrument
that wants to be close miked.

We are playing there
May 12th and maybe on the 13th. This is Frank Wakefield's
first time back to Emory Gap TN since he was a kid.
It is being billed as Frank Wakefield's Return To Emory Gap Tour.
Maybe you can pass this on to your list of tapers.
Have them contact me at FWB@Candlewater.com
Thanks

I like it the way it is. I can live with the occasional spam getting
through. It beats spam on every post (ala Yahoo or whatever).

As the moderator of the Peter Rowan yahoo group I'd like to weigh in on this.
There are reasonable spam filters in a yahoo group though it does require
actions by a moderator to insure that the spammers are kept out.
Here's how I do it:
1. All membership requests require approval by me.
2. I send an email reply to prospective member to engage in some Rowan related
conversation. No reply = no membership.
3. When a new member is approved, their posts are set to "moderated", which
means I must approve.
4. After the first on-topic post, I change membership to "un-moderated".
This activity takes about 10 min per week of my time, at most.
The Rowan group has a low volume and small membership (~500), compared to
DAT-heads so this may not be the solution but it works fine for us.
As to having to change firewall settings etc, that's simply not true.
YMMV,
Marc
