For 2-channel editing, I use Peak 5.x with Ozone 3 plugins. Quattro Pro
has many fans and is cheaper. For multi channel, Logic Express or
ProTools LE.

I use Peak by BIAS. There is also a Peak LE that is a little
cheaper. DSP Quattro is cheaper than the full Peak, but I find the
interface a little more convoluted.

For simple conversions (sample rate, gain, normalizing, etc) of a whole file,
Barbabatch works very well, and uses quality algorithms.
For actual editing (splicing, fading, tone adjustment, etc) Bias Peak
is popular, but the algorithms are not really all equally high
quality, and every time they fix one set of bugs, they introduce
another. In one version, markers kept on appearing, disappearing and
jumping from place to place. Without rhyme or reason saving a file
after just adding a marker or region may or may not involve rewriting
the whole file. Sometimes SD II files are needed for burning a CD,
other times if it isn't an AIF file, burning won't work. Your mileage
may vary.

Thanks for the quick and knowledgeable responses to my question. From
the responses I've seen, Audacity has the most fans (free, why not!).
One Brother endorsed Sound Studio and I got the url for Amadeus II that
I am going to test.
I'm writing this so I can share the information, as more than a couple
of people were interested in other programs than the ones they were using.
Sound Studio has a $30 instant rebate (total cost minus shipping $49.99)
at MacMall:
http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~641055.asp
Amadeus II is a program that supports FLAC and costs only $30 and is a
download. They have a trial version here:
http://www.hairersoft.com/AmadDownload.html
Audacity is open source freeware. I have an Intel-Mac and they have a
couple of betas for Intel Macs, but reading the Forum it looks to be
pretty buggy. What the heck, though (again), it's free. Perhaps the
stable non-Intel version is more stable. Here's Audacity's link:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Here's the link to the Intel-Mac versions and forums:
http://audacityteam.org/mac/
One kind soul gave me a list of other programs he has heard of but not
used - among which are:
Digital Performer, Cubase, Nuendo, Spark.
I haven't researched these yet.
Thanks again to the many who have offered their sage advice, and if
anyone has any further thoughts, I would love to hear from them.
take care,
Clancey

Andy Summers has an Autobiography due out in October
and will be doing a "book tour" and I'm hoping to find
some Jazz lovers out here in the DAT world who would
be so kind as to record the radio shows and if perhaps
someone reading this in Costa Rica (or knows someone
in Costa Rica) can tape tomorrow night, that would be
incredible.

I've always liked Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/); also, SoX
(http://sox.sourceforge.net/) should be able to work on OS X too.

The Led Zeppelin played on Osaka Festival Hall 35 years ago. So I have
the 90 mins version of this shows. It's directly came from the original
master cassette to my DAT. If anyone has the original masters of the
other shows, I will trade (original taper or master tapes holder, ONLY).
