How does one avoid sector boundary problems? I know this is an old
issue, but I'm trying out a bunch of apps. (Peak, Sound Studio,
Audacity, Amadeus II), and I get blips at my track IDs when I process a
recording. Any guidance off list would be greatly appreciated. Rich

is there such a beast these days?
basically i want to just hook up a DAT coax to a USB box (or pcmcia i
guess) to plug into laptop, i saw one once but it was optical only and
my only working deck is coax out only
(has optical in which i sadly never use). i guess i could run the
signal thru my
sony 59ES and use it in standby mode as a opt to coax switch but that
is a bit much.

I am nearing the end of converting my DAT collection, too. While
I've never calculated the hours, I would guess it is about 2000
hours. Anyway, I did a couple of different methods (and still do).
1) Recording from DAT into computer. This is, of course, real time,
and requires a little baby-sitting. DATs that have multiple shows on
them in multiple sample rates can cause probs with some software.
Make sure that your I/O is bit accurate.
2) DDS drive. Some time ago there was quite a bit of talk about DDS
drives that could have firmware flashed to read audio grade DATs.
That is the method that I have used to do most DATs. So much faster
(slightly faster than 2x) and can really increase the reward for time
inputting audio. I'm on a Mac, and there is a free app that rips the
DATs, I do not know what is currently available for other platforms.
I found tons of stuff on the web on flashing the firmware, and was
able to do that to a drive I bought at a computer fair. And since
SCSI is expensive for my PCI Express Mac, I use a firewire to SCSI
adapter that has worked like a champ. There are also USB to SCSI,
but I've never tried those.
3) For archiving, I FLAC the files and store them on a mirrored RAID
drive. I've also started burning DVDs of the RAID'd data. Just be
sure that the work you do above is not wasted on a bad hard drive.
For 5000 hours, you are looking at significant storage needs. A 2
hour show is roughly 1.25GB, so 5000 hours is over 3TB, before any
FLAC'ing, but also before any redundancy. Drives are getting bigger
every month with 750 now shipping, so you can probably grow with your
needs.
Have fun, it's a big project.

I use a Digigram VX Pocket V2 on my laptop for a
straight digital transfer of my DAT's to an external
USB drive. I actually own 2 complete VX Pockets, I
bought an extra one for an emergency backup.
Be sure to set the VX Pocket software in Data Mode,
that way there is no resampling of bits.
In your DAW software use the WDM or ASIO drivers, do
not use the MME driver, its too buggy.
It may take a few different configurations to get it
to work correctly, but once it does, it sounds very
clean.
I found one on ebay for $180.00 I hope this helps.
Peace,
Bruce
