Some of you might think that DAT is going the way of the Dodo (or to put it in tech terms, beta), but what you pessimists don't realize is that when a medium has been so useful and so viable for so long, it doesn't slip away. If one looks to History for answers we find that people are still recording onto tape, and _prefer_ it for it's natural analog sound. Certainly the same arguement can't be given for DAT, but it's been around a very long time. It wasn't until fairly recently that betacams were out out to pasture. Long after consumer beta died, professionals still used the medium. Betacams are still very expensive because they're still useful, but most find that DV is cheaper with similar results. DAT was never a consumer medium. Because of that there are warehouses full of data stored on DATs (my home bing one of them). It would be foolish for the principle makers of DAT hardware to abandon the medium. I think it's easy to jump on the bandwagon for the new exciting "upgrade" in technology, but as we've seen with the renewed interest in vinyl by even those who weren't born when the first CDs hit stores, tried and true formats will stick around as long as they need to...which may well be long after even the most hardcore among us have long passed on to something else. Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2006 07:37:34 -0500 you guys w/your "i'll never get rid of my massive DAT collection", and "the media is still going strong"... you crack me up. DAT decks in your car? sheesh. transfer these things, at your leisure... dump them on a fat ipod or something, and get a stereo in car w/an AUX input, its all the rage these days in car stereos for the iPod generation. No doubt..the tapes will last a long time. Longer than any of the decks will. ------------------------------ From: Nick Georges Subject: lack of Forums.. Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2006 07:40:35 -0500 yea, this list is sort of dead. and the Oade forum is missed as well. but, there is always the taperssection.com, which has been the best forum all along. come and check it out...register and be a player! :) ------------------------------ From: Carlos Martinez Subject: Re: I guess we should call the digital recording-heads now? Tapers move there now: http://taperssection.com/index.php I am not a taper, but I guess you may find a lot of info there. Carlos E. Anyone have one for sale? I really didn't want to go consumer-recorder, but it was a good deal, and it is pretty much the same as the old HHB (love their analog to digital converters, they sound very sweet). So, if someone can help me out, that would be great. thanks, Mike Parker ____________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsored Link Free Uniden 5.8GHz Phone System with Packet8 Internet Phone Service http://www.getpacket8.net/yahoo2 ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
