Sony web site indicates they are no longer repairing these.
Is it worth having anyone else do it?

Thought I'd throw my .02 in here to stir up the discussion. Before we go
bashing one format or praising another let's remember a few things. Most
of the shows one has prior to the late 80's were recorded on cassette
and/or open reel recorders. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that
remembers having to flip or change a tape every 45-50 minutes. How
excited were we when the TCD5M arrived allowing the use of metal tape?
What about an eight bit PCM recording? How elated were you when you
listened to your first DAT master? What about the first time you saw or
used one of the sound devices solid state recorders. It was most likely
a similar feeling the first time someone played back a recording made on
a wax cylinder. My point is as the technology grows and the recorders
and media improve one is still limited to the source you are recording.
Most sound systems and PA.s are not that high fidelity. Before you go
putting down one format or another remember the most important point is
these shows are being recorded and archived. Would you rather have a
cassette or DAT version of a show or no recording at all? Personally,
I'd take a high end mic set into an analog cassette version of a show
over a set of cheap binaural mic's into a 24 bit 96K solid state
recorder. That's my preference. Some feel DAT is dead, I feel it never
caught on. True it has its flaws but if it works for you continue to use
it. Record. Don't get caught up in whose mic is the biggest.
Roll on! Adam
