Thanks! For future reference: holding the eject key while powering on 
the unit did the trick.
Interesting enough. I thought I had tried this before. I had tried it 
running from an external
power source though. This time it was with the internal battery. Not 
sure if that had anything
to do with it though.

its a little beat up cosmetically, but it runs like a top (dont they all).
last serviced in 2001 and used sparingly afterwards.  4pin xlr power 
cable included, ready for your
choice of 7.2v>6v sources.

first reasonable offer takes it home.
