Reply-To: Wes Wagnon Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 11:36:16 -0800 (GMT-08:00) Your plan to simply play the dats and record them using a sound card will work and will be the least expensive option, but you will impair the quality of the audio due to the digital-->audio and audio-->digital conversions. If you can keep the sound in digital format, you will have a lossless conversion. One way to do this would be to obtain one of those older Seagate DDS DAT drives that were made for computer back-up, but which will read digital audio files on DAT tapes. These drives are available on eBay. You need to get the right kind of drive, possibly update the firmware, get a scsi external enclosure to hold it, and you'll need a scsi pc card to interface with your laptop (Adaptec makes these). The software you'll need for the download process is called DAT2WAV, which does what you expect, it will transfer and convert the DAT recordings to a WAV file on your laptop or external HD. I've done all of this and gotten it to work, but it's not for the faint of heart. Check the DAT-Heads archrives and search the net for more info about this. Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 12:08:03 -0800 (PST) I use DDS Tape drives and DAT2WAV with the best success.=0A=0AYou can get t= he drives off ebay pretty cheap $20-30 (you will need an audio capible driv= e - such as the Connor/Seagate CTD-8000 series). You just need the DAT2WAV= software and a SCSI controller. =0A=0AYou could probably get a PCMCIA Adap= tec SCSI controller for $50.=0A=0AYou will need the audio firmware.=0A=0ATh= e other benefit of this approach is that since this is a media rip (similar= to using audio extraction of CD's) you can extract the audio at 2x speed. = And with DAT2WAV you are given a error report on the source media (as it r= eads the tape). So you can identify problem areas on the tape and the resu= lting WAV files.=0A=0AI personally use a couple SGI Sony STD-9000 drives (w= ith 13.1 firmware) and have had pretty good success. In some cases I have = been able to extract audio cleanly from tapes that played with diginoise on= a bunch of other DAT decks (Sony D8, Tascam DA-P1, Panasonic SV-3800, etc)= .=0A=0AI was able to transfer 80 tapes (mix of 60m and 90m) in about a week= and a half using one drive with this approach.=0A=0AHope this helps,=0ARic= hard ------------------------------ From: rappard@dds.nl Subject: Free Mogwai FLAC DVD-R....
