I don't really see what the big deal is either, even
if it seems a bit tacky in this forum. I first started
collecting by buying tapes from people in Goldmine and
Circus Magazine. I have hardly ever bought shows since
I started taping myself not long after but there are a
few shows I would pay a hefty bounty for if that's
what it takes to bring them to the surface.
Thanks mainly to torrents for making buying and
selling largely unnecessary but not everyone holding a
rare recording believes it's their duty to do a public
service by releasing it to everyone. Hell, even I
don't believe it even if I seed like crazy when I have
broadband access
(FYI - I will have broadband access this weekend and
will be seeding loads of masters TBD on Dime).

The rule on DAT-Heads is simple:
If you're not cool enough to get it for free,
you're not cool enough to get it here.

These are all Dolby-B, with the AN-300 being a 4-channel unit to mate
with Teac's 4-track reel to reels.
Dolby A is a sophisticated, expensive system for professional
studios. For example, the Dolby 363 was for unobtrusive
noise-lowering of 1/2-track 15 ips tapes - i.e. tapes which already
had low noise by pre-digital criteria <g>
Your terminology was a bit unclear: a "4-track" recorder handles
4-channels simultaneously, but a "stereo 1/4-track" lays down only 2
tracks (stereo) in one direction, then another 2 tracks in the
reverse direction, when the reels are switched. I expect that your
A-77 has stereo 1/4-track heads. If so, you wouldn't need the AN-300
Teac model - but it of course won't handle true 4-track tapes (e.g.
made on a Teac 2340)
Another standalone unit you could look out for is the Nakamichi
NR-200 (Dolby B/C)
