regarding the r9, I never noticed any noise in mine when adjusting the 
levels...but I dont adjust them any way.  I run line in and use an 
outboard preamp.

of the flash recorders mentioned, none hold a candle to the marantz 
pmd660 after the Oade modifications.
even better than 24bit.
Its all about the analog section.  And all these decks are "eh".  after 
the mods, the 660 is stunning.
