Initially the company denied that the unit could be powered externally - a lie. Several people had been working on an external power source. The first thing I tried was a 'battery sled' - a little box that held [rechargeable] AA cells and had a USB connection to the Microtrac. It was ok but I was looking for more hours of use. There was a fellow that built a unit called a 'juice box'. This was a step down box using a 9-12v lithium battery [from portable DVD players or cameras] as input power. The voltage is stepped down to 5v and input to the MT via a USB plug. It is super. I get more hours than I need -[and I'm now using a 16G memory card] . I also picked up a backup battery when the Radio Shacks around here were closing. I understand that that fellow is not longer making the unit. Perhaps you can find someone or you can built it yourself. I can probably find the guy's e-mail if you want to write for a skematic.
