I'm planning to move to a solid-state recorder in the next few
months. Associated gear is an Apogee Mini-Me and a pair of Neumann
TLM-103s (obviously not a stealth outfit!). As near as I can figure,
there are really only three contenders:
Marantz PCM671
Fostex FR2
Tascam HD-P2
(Yes, a laptop computer could do the job, but I'd prefer not to go
that route for various reasons, such as battery life, robustness and size.)
Is there any reason to prefer one of the above over the others, or to
exclude any of them? Any others I've missed (unit must have digital
in and a 96K sampling rate)? Any of these have known bugs, or
service/support problems? All else being equal, the Tascam looks the
best, but hand-on experience trumps datasheets every time.
Thanks in advance for your datapoints.
