I recommend the Sony R-500. It has the best error correction I have
encountered, and is a fine machine all-round.
I picked one up on ebay last November for under $300. There are currently 5
units currently listed there.
I have also had great success using the Sony SDT-1000 DDS drive, although
it's a big pain to get it configured on the computer... It won't work with
tapes that don't have ABS, however.
