Based on your question, you may have better results transplanting the electronics and leaving the head/deck geometry alone on the non-clogging deck. Hope this helps. Best, Gary
From: Harris <storyplace@gmail.com> Subject: New to DAT and need help Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2008 01:15:11 -0400 Hi! I'm new to both DAT and to this list, and would really appreciate advice about a problem I'm having. I have a Tascam DA-30 deck and a whole set of archive DAT tapes I need to play. The problem I'm having is that the tapes were recorded on a Sony TCD-D8, some at regular sample rate (48KHz) and some at what seems to be an extended play or long play mode at a different sample rate (it comes up 32KHz on the DA-30s monitor). The problem I'm having is that while all of these tapes played fine in the TCD-D8 (several years ago), only the 48KHz seem to currently play on the Tascam. The machine registers the start ID and control track numbers, but it shows no audio present at all. Do I a) need a different player (must it be Sony)? b) need different settings of some kind? c) need to give up on these tapes (they are 10 years old, have they deteriorated? But why only the extended play ones?) Many, many thanks for your perspective. The contents of the tapes is extremely important to me--the last recordings of the voices of several relatives who have passed away. all best, Greg

There are 2 32kHz formats used: 16-bit linear, and 12-bit non-linear (the latter is used by Sony). I believe there are some non-Sony decks that handle 12-bit nonlinear; the most likely are Denon, and some Pioneer. Seth
