Greg-

I recorded a show once in 32khz LP mode by accident, the resulting tape 
would not play on my SV-3800.  The problem seemed to be that the Sony 
portable decks run the tape at half speed as well as being 12 bit nonlinear 
(as per Seth).  Your easiest way out is to play the tape back on one of the 
Sony portable decks and copy it to the DA-30's 32khz mode, or convert it 
directly to some other format (CD, cassette, what-have-you)....hopefully 
your D8 still works!  If not, perhaps you can find some kind soul locally 
who has a Sony portable.....

Good call, Seth... I'd forgotten about the 12 bit super LP mode... 
It was never all that pleasant sounding anyway... ;)
  
Could it also be an alignment/tracking difference between the 
1/2 sized head of the master deck and the full sized DA-30

There are 2 32kHz formats used: 16-bit linear, and 12-bit non-linear
(the latter is used by Sony).  I believe there are some non-Sony decks
that handle 12-bit nonlinear; the most likely are Denon, and some
Pioneer.
