Subject: 32 Khz to Mac question
Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008 00:12:38 -0400
Hi fellow DAT-heads:
Thank you all for the recent advice about playing back Sony's
long-play (32Khz, non-linear 12 bit) format. I found a used DTC-700
and for the first time in almost a decade (since I sold my TCD-D8 from
lack of money) I'm able to listen to interviews I recorded with my
grandmother and other relatives who have since passed away.
Unfortunately, a new complication has arisen. Whereas with 48KHz
recordings, I'm able to use Audacity to record to my Mac, with the 32
KHz tapes the voices sound speeded-up and at times there's jitter and
other weird digital noise (I'm using a SPDIF coaxial cable). This is
definitely a software problem--I'm able to monitor the signal reaching
my i/o card with headphones, and the voices are normal there, no
jitter.
Question: does anyone know of settings on Audacity, or are there
other (freeware or cheap) programs, for Mac or PC (I can run Boot
Camp), that are better able to handle the 32KHz standard?
Alternatively, I can just record the tapes as analog, but that seems
somewhat to defeat the point of having recorded digitally in the first
place...
best,
Greg
p.s. Is anyone interested in buying the Tascam DA-30 that I now have
no further use for? It's in perfect shape except that there's some
mechanical looseness in the input & output knobs (they still function
fine, but got knocked around at some point). The guy I bought it from
a year ago had just replaced the heads (he said), and my total use of
it was about 2 hours. It's rack-mountable.
