No need to drill the remote - just press the menu button (it will light up) and you should see "SET ID 6 00" dislayed - then turn the shuttle wheel to the left and it should display "HOUR XXXX" with the total number of hours displayed.

You drilled the remote?!!!   WTF?!

Just push the menu button (located just to the left of the jog/shuttle dial)
and then step the dial left or right (I believe it's 2 clicks left) until it
displays "HOUR". Just to the right of "HOUR" in the display will be the
number of hours logged on the tape heads.

What the procedure for showing the hours of use on an R500? I remember
having one once and I drilled the remote, but I have forgotten how to do so.
