JVC XD-Z505 DAT no sound problem - update (HWTest)
From: HWTest <hwtest@volny.cz> Subject: JVC XD-Z505 DAT no sound problem - update Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2008 16:29:04 +0100 Update - I now probably know where the problem is. I've taken pictures of the heads and there is some white dirt on the heads, especially on Head2 it is directly in the gap. http://web.iol.cz/pewstec/Head1.jpg http://web.iol.cz/pewstec/Head2.jpg I don't know what it is and how to get rid of it. I've tried it with a small swab with isopropylalcohol, but no go. I don' know if I should use some solvent, it could help if it is glue from Scotch tape but I'm scared that this (solvent) could damage the windings insulation of the heads. I really don't know what to do a I would really appreciate any tips, ideas or help. ___________________________________________________________________________ I recently bought this used JVC XD-Z505 (should be the same as Marantz DT80 and Philips DAT850) DAT deck and it worked well. I regularly used it for playing and recording and all was OK. But now it suddenly stoped giving sound when playing, no signal on the level meters. Recording seems to be fine - but I don't have a second DAT to verify. When I'm cueing, there is sound. When I rewind the tape, the A Time display and Start IDs are changing without skips/problems. I've cleaned the heads with a dry cleaning tape and as it didn't help, also manually, but still no sound. I don't know, how to display the bit error rate, if it is even possible on this deck. I'm using Sony DT-120, DT-90 and TDK DA-R120 tapes. What could be the problem? Are the heads worn out? HWTest
