Gary, you rock! I doubted it, but gave it a try and you led me down the
right path. The master disc that could not be finalized and could not be read on
any computer drive I tried is now cloned perfectly, repaired and saved for
posterity. Here's exactly what I experienced and what I did in case it might
benefit others.
I reloaded the master disc (that could not be finalized) back into one of my
Tascam CD-RW700s. As before, the Tascam's display began flashing "Repair" and
locked into this mode, making it impossible to power down or do anything
else. This time I followed your instructions and just left it alone. After 57
minutes the repair mode stopped flashing and much to my delight was replaced by
a track and timing readout on the disc!
The audio data on the disc was a length of 56:55 so you were correct in that
it reads the data in real time. At this point I could play the disc on the
unit just fine, so I digitally transfered it (in real time) to another unit just
to be safe. Turns out this was unneccesary, but I didn't want to take any
chances now that I could play the master for the first time.
After it was safety copied, I tried to finalize the corrupted master again,
but it still would not finalize. With the audio data safety copied already, I
decided to try and record another track on the unfinalized master. I simply
recorded a 10 second track of silence after the existing 56:55 track. That did
the trick! When I went to finalize it again, everything worked perfectly and
it finalized the corrupted master, which now is recognized in all my computer
drives and plays back just fine on any player. So, my assumption is that by
adding the extra track, the unit rewrote the missing Table Of Contents info,
thus repairing the disc.
I even went back to a few similarly problematic master discs from nearly 6
years ago, where power loss or voltage spikes during recording created masters
unable to be finalized or played back. I'm glad I kept them around even though
they were worthless all this time as this same procedure saved them as well!
Great advice Gary! I'm sure many have experienced this issue over the years.
Who knows how many masters have been tossed because nobody realizes that
"repair" mode simply means the unit is reading the data in real time. I searched
high and low all over the web and found nothing on this specific issue. In
fact every other response I got to my query was either "the disc is a goner" or
that it required expensive software and significant tech experience to even
attempt to retrieve the data.
Thanks again Gary! I hope by this post getting archived that it helps others
in the future.
Best regards, Alan

I made a distorted recording of Friday's show.
Anyone else rolling either Thursday or Friday?
I'd love a copy.
Going to try to redeem myself tonight at Lucinda Williams.

The L.A. techno-pop group Folio is headed on tour this month. Great
musicians and very good original material. They are open to tapers,
would even appreciate taping. And please let me know if you tape the
shows and get any good recordings.
Thanks.
