Spider - female independent singer/songwriter touring New England (Mike M)
From: Mike M <eupeptic@gmail.com> Subject: Spider - female independent singer/songwriter touring New England Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 08:20:22 -0700 If anyone in MA, NH, or ME is free over the next few days and might like to check out the small band Spider (Jane Herships is the singer and guitarist, and she should have a couple/few members playing backup instruments) in order to make a recording, I'd certainly love for you to do so - especially as the shows are free! (tips/CD purchases are of course welcome, but not necessary.) (She doesn't often tour more than a few hundred miles from where she lives in New York, and I live in California. Plus, she's only done one show in her own band over the past 18 months [she has performed as a member of other bands, though] so I've been waiting all this time for her to go on tour again.) I've recorded three of her shows from early 2006 and mid-2007 and asked her about archive.org, which she was supportive of (though I've been lazy at getting her music up there). If you do go to tape her I'd recommend you speak with her first (she's very friendly and always glad to meet people who are interested in hearing her music) and let her know that you'd like to record her performance (just so she's aware of what's going on). (Two of the shows I've recorded were at a coffee shop and I made recordings directly from the amp [RCA tape out] at the same time as from the front of the audience, and I preferred the sound of the amp as she sings softly and there was a lot of background noise [plus it was a small portable bass amp that was being used as the venue didn't have their own sound system, and she was performing solo so the vocals and acoustic-electric guitar were the only things to record]. The third was at Cafe Du Nord [a bar in SF which has a fairly good sound system] and the audience recording I made there [in direct line with the left speaker) came out quite well. [So my point is if you'll only be using one recorder go with the amp if the venue doesn't have good sound.]) 7/7 - Lucky Dog Music Hall - 89 Green St, Worcester, MA 01604 7/9 - Hogfarm Studios - 140 Main St, Suite 107, Biddeford, ME 04005 7/10 - Muddy River - 21 Congress St, Portsmouth, NH 03801 7/11 - Brew'd Awakening - 61 Market St, Lowell, MA 01852 7/12 - Star Island - 30 Middle St, Portsmouth, NH 03801 Notes: All shows are listed as starting at 8 PM. I'd assume that most shows should be about 2 hours in length (1 hour per band), aside from the one at Hogfarm Studios (which specifically states 8-11 PM, and also lists The Plaines, and Chris Teret as performing). I can't guarantee the accuracy of the information above as Lucky Dog Music Hall is the only venue where the address was specified among the tour dates for Spider and This Frontier Needs Heroes. I'd guess that Spider might be performing first, but her band is not even listed by any of the venues (which is not that uncommon for small venues, and it seems that her band is mainly just tagging along with This Frontier Needs Heroes). The site for Muddy River Smokehouse only mentions Ryan Ordway Band for the 10th (and the site for that band doesn't list any shows at all for the 10th or any other time), so I'm not sure what's up with that (or even if I have the correct site, but I think I do). And I didn't see any mention of musical performances at the site for Star Island Corporation, but it's the only Star Island I've found online that's in Portsmouth, NH. http://www.myspace.com/spidersongs - The site for her band.
